Before specifying the installation of a rain chain, take note of the following:
- Make sure that the ground area under your rain chain is properly prepared to prevent ground erosion. Remember, water is going to be falling in a concentrated quantity. You don't want your landscaping to be washed away! Rocks and spill-ways are a good idea.
- Confirm that you have adequate sloping away from the side of your building so that rain water does not collect towards the building itself.
- Depending on how much rain your region is subject to, you might want to consider rain chains for small sections of gutter in order to limit the amount of water that will be cascading down the chain.
- If you select a heavy gauge rain chain, make sure that it is securely held in place. It may be necessary to add reinforcement at the gutter itself so that the gutter is not damaged or pulled off its hangers over time.
- And if you live in an area that is subject to snow and ice, remember that ice gets heavy! (see the bullet above)
